Of Men and Morals

Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men, nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10

Within minutes of her tragic death, videos of the lifeless body of 17 year old Adrianna Sobers laying a few feet away from a shackled-out motorcycle, were being circulated on WhatsApp and Facebook. Adrianna was the pillion rider on the bike which had been involved with two buses.
Emergency responders were quick on the scene. But not before scores of onlookers who shook their head in disbelief at the untimely death, the 4th road fatality for 2015 which marred the already sombre mood of Crucifixion day.
I saw one of the “milder” videos and regretted it for it troubled me the rest of the day. As in cases past, the Royal Barbados Police Force and a few others took to upbraided these “social journalists” for their insensitivity… circulating gruesome images without fear of them falling into the hands of relatives of the deceased, especially if they had to discover, through those images, the death of their loved one.
Understandable as this is, the thought came to me about the futility of such a request today. Unless the police decided to catch and charge persons for circulating such “news”, I do not see persons desisting from the act so easily. Why do I say so? It goes beyond “bad news sells”. The fact is that what was inconsiderate twenty, even ten years ago, has eventually become the norm because of society’s loosened grip on what was once viewed to be appropriate, decent and moral.
These appeals are a mere knee-jerk reaction to a wider problem. If we say that morality is the issue, then we cannot in other areas refer to what is evil as right and what is right as over-religious and anti-tolerant of a modern society. Shun videos of the deceased but keep videos which contain sexual scenes, foul language or facetious attacks on biblical principles. Is this what we are saying? Moral decline we see is caused by sin. Moral persuasion can only be effective therefore, if we address the issue of sin.

Heavenly Father, Your Word sets before us clearly what is right and wrong. Help us to choose the right path in all areas, rather than be partial in keeping your commandments.
