Fundamentals of Prayer – Chapter 3 Why Should We Pray?

We mentioned in the previous chapter that through Jesus’ death, we are brought into relationship with God (when we believe in Jesus as the Savior and repent of our sins). One of the most important keys to maintaining a healthy relationship with anyone is communication. Like-wise, prayer with God ensures that we are in intimacy with Him. Not only this, but prayer helps us to resist temptations that if yielded to, will break that intimacy. Ref. James 1:13-15, 4:7; Mark 14:37-38

One of the most important keys to maintaining a healthy relationship with anyone is communication.

So in brief, we pray…

  • to maintain intimacy with God
  • for spiritual growth in our Christian walk
  • to change the outcome of events
  • for strength to resist temptations
  • for God’s direction on a matter
  • for God’s peace

Prayer is also the vehicle used to accept Jesus Christ into our hearts as Lord and Saviour. We call this the Prayer of Repentance or The Sinner’s Prayer.
