Within minutes of her tragic death, videos of the lifeless body of 17 year old Adrianna Sobers laying a few feet away from a shackled-out motorcycle, were being circulated on WhatsApp and Facebook. Adrianna was the pillion rider on the bike which had been involved with two buses.
Emergency responders were quick on the scene. But not before scores of onlookers who shook their head in disbelief at the untimely death, the 4th road fatality for 2015 which marred the already sombre mood of Crucifixion day.

The poor will always be amongst us. And it’s not just those who lack even the basic material substance, but those who are emotionally, mentally, socially and spiritually destitute.
I’m glad the scriptures used the word “amongst” because we tend – particularly if we come from the West, or we live in an affluent neighbourhood – to think that the poor can only be found in parts of Africa and Asia.

I recall having an interview early 2015 with Pastor Roger Husbands, Founder and Chairman of Drug Education Counseling Services, Barbados. We discussed how some young people were crying out to be given jobs – despite not having any certificates – and were turning instead to crime for the fast dollar.
Of course, we recognise that as in similar recessionary periods of Barbados’…
