Within minutes of her tragic death, videos of the lifeless body of 17 year old Adrianna Sobers laying a few feet away from a shackled-out motorcycle, were being circulated on WhatsApp and Facebook. Adrianna was the pillion rider on the bike which had been involved with two buses.
Emergency responders were quick on the scene. But not before scores of onlookers who shook their head in disbelief at the untimely death, the 4th road fatality for 2015 which marred the already sombre mood of Crucifixion day.
I saw one of the “milder” videos and regretted it for it troubled me the rest of the day. Continue reading

Children must be nurtured, not tortured

But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children. Psalms 103:17

An article published in a daily newspaper of March 31st (The Daily Nation) entitled “Teens running from abuse” really brought home the sad reality many juveniles face today.

It quoted Mr. Erwin Leacock, principal of the Government Industrial School – a school for delinquent children – as saying that people were quick to judge children when they ran away from home but that “in most instances, they are running from something and not running to something”.

Wanting Something For Nothing

I recall having an interview early 2015 with Pastor Roger Husbands, Founder and Chairman of Drug Education Counseling Services, Barbados. We discussed how some young people were crying out to be given jobs – despite not having any certificates – and were turning instead to crime for the fast dollar.
